Travel

On the 12th, the day I left for Tanzania, I did not go into the village. It was too far out and I would not of had time. There was nothing for me to do at the hospital, so I walked to the town. I took pictures and sat in a local restaurant while waiting to go. I visited with one of the young volunteers who served as a translates. It was a delightful visit.
Then off to Tanzania. I left by car about 1:00, arriving at t he airport by 5:00. My plane left at 8:40. Check in and customs went without a hitch, tho once again I lost a knife to tsa. I arrived in Kenya, Nairobi at about 3:00 ( 5:00 Nairobi time ) and sat till I left for Kilimanjaro at 9:00. I was met by a young Swahili and guided to my car and driver and we set off for the resort. We left about 11:00 and above at the resort by 3:30. Now after 26 hrs of traveling. We set out directly into the park, and I spent 3-4 hrs looking. In awe.
I returned to the lodge where I ate with elephants.
Pictures to follow.

Day 5 - the village

The villages continue to be the high point of our trip. We leave down a two lain road, drive thru what I have come to appreciate as a town, on to a dirt road past the goats and chickens and women carrying everything obn their heads to a village. Today's village was larger than the others with more buildings. A courtyard, and apparently a tribal meeting hall where we met the chief and his elders. After that I
T was business as usual. We each saw 30 -40 people with a variety of complainta. "Waist" or back pain the most common followed buy a variety of gi complaints. We offer what we can, occasionally encouraging referral to the hospital, or writing a script. The villagers seem grateful, more accurately hopeful, that we will help. Then we play a little and go home to pack for tomorrow.
I will try to include representative pictures, in order to allow you to see what I saw. Of course we do not really help,Except possibly to give hope. It is only in the continual presence and education that any true hope can be achieved. But it s i

Day 5

Our container has arrived all considered only 2 days late, good for African time. A testament to mark's efforts. We unloaded to the hospital and will pack the supplies for our next trip to the villages. I'll try to send pictures as I found wi fi at the hospital.

Day 4

This was the real beginning of the trip. This morning we were all tired. Those who returned from Kumasi were still exhausted. Our surgeons went off to the hospital, our container finally was released from port, it seems the right funds were finally distributed. And we went to a village. We went to small village about an hour from our house. It was in the jungle off a dirt road. There were approximately 1000 folks in the village, probably 200 were present and we saw probably 100 of that.they had a range of problems Andy seemed happy we were there, although  god knows we had little to offer. (Pictures are to be posted but we have to little band width. ) We all had fun and most likely we were reminded of our good fortune.

Day three

We had 2 days in the local hospital, saw probably 200 people. Mostly hernias, lipomas and goiters. The surgeons have begun operating on the little things, our container is still held up in port. Tomorrow we go into a village about an hour into the country.  I will send  pictures as I get to a wifi that has better band with.
One interesting problem is that one of our members had a syncopal episode with seizure. Our team took care of her, and I was proud of the teams performance. We had to send our patient off to Kumasi, 2 hrs to the N. 3 of our tea went out with the rig and 2 more followed behind. We had her fairly well packaged and the diagnoses made.
Tomorrow we start early.
